a&o Hostels has secured an 874 million euro refinancing package to support its growth. The German hostel chain has brought in a new leader to steer that strategy. Markus Harder assumed the role of chief financial officer in July. Harder now works alongside CEO Oliver Winter and the group’s shareholders to guide the next phase of development for the European hostel chain. The facility manages a network of nearly 30,000 beds.
Harder’s role involves supervising the group’s finance and legal functions, internal organization, risk management, and purchasing. He is also tasked with accompanying the company’s digital roadmap. The roadmap involves increased reliance on the cloud. It also focuses on artificial intelligence and mobile solutions. The company views these technologies as essential for modernizing its operations.

Before joining a&o, Harder served as CFO and board member at DeepL for four years. He helped the translation software company grow its revenue tenfold. Harder led funding rounds that propelled it toward unicorn status. His previous experience also includes a tenure as CFO at Contentful. Contentful was later acquired by Salesforce. He also spent time at SoundCloud. His career started in real estate investment banking at Morgan Stanley.
Oliver Winter, the company’s CEO, highlighted the value of Harder’s background in his statement. The statement noted that Harder’s experience in strategic planning and financial analysis is valuable. It also mentioned his skill in debt and equity fundraising. Winter believes this will help continue the development and optimization of the platform. According to the CEO, Harder’s experience in technology companies will help accelerate automation. This experience should also improve operational and financial efficiency.
Bringing a financial and technology leader to a hospitality giant suggests that the guest experience will increasingly rely on digital efficiency. While a&o is a budget-focused brand, the integration of high-end AI and cloud systems usually targets backend operations. These backend operations impact the customer directly. For travelers booking through mobile apps, this could mean faster processing times. For those using automated keyless entry, it suggests fewer hold-ups during peak travel periods. The focus on efficiency suggests a move toward streamlining the often complex logistics of high-volume lodging. Such shifts potentially offer more reliable services to families and school groups who rely on predictable check-in and check-out procedures.

The appointment comes at a time of significant expansion for a&o. The group targets families, school groups, and independent travelers in major European cities. They finalized the 874 million euro refinancing with Apollo earlier this year. Such financing is supported by equity commitments from Proprium Capital Partners and StepStone Group. The goal is to double the size of the portfolio and strengthen a pan-European presence.
The firm has been active in acquiring beds over the last two years. In that period, a&o added approximately 11,500 beds, either already in operation or currently under development. Renovations are also part of this active phase. In 2025 alone, the chain recorded a record 2.8 million guests. The figure represents 6.6 million bed nights. The rapid expansion and the financial backing required to sustain it position a&o as one of the largest players in the European hostel market.
