Indian travelers show strong intent to travel and spend

Indian travellers are approaching 2022 with renewed enthusiasm for getting away, according to American Express‘s Global Travel Trends Report, which surveyed respondents across seven countries including India. Nearly all Indian participants indicated plans to travel this year, with 93 percent saying they expect to spend the same or more on trips compared to a typical pre-pandemic year. The motivation behind this surge in travel interest is largely driven by a desire for new experiences (48 percent), relaxation (46 percent), and exploring unfamiliar destinations (45 percent). Most respondents believe that 2022 will offer less stressful travel planning than the previous year, reflecting a growing sense of control over their journeys after a turbulent 2021.

Strong Intent to Spend and Explore

Indians show a marked willingness to commit to travel plans despite uncertainty. A notable 92 percent said they are ready to book a trip for 2022 even if cancellations or modifications become necessary later. Almost every surveyed individual plans at least one vacation this year, with 23 percent aiming for two trips and 20 percent targeting three or more. Additionally, 94 percent expressed intentions to increase spending on international travel compared to 2021 levels.

A significant portion of Indian travellers also prioritize purposeful and sustainable tourism. The majority expressed interest in visiting destinations that allow them to engage with local communities and immerse themselves in regional culture. Environmental consciousness plays a strong role in decision-making: 94 percent said they would opt for a “greencation,” and 93 percent are more likely to choose services from brands committed to reducing their environmental footprint—both figures exceeding global averages.

Dream Trips and Multi-Scene Destinations

Travel aspirations are shifting toward fulfilling long-held dreams. Sixty-nine percent of respondents plan to visit at least one dream destination this year, with 50 percent open to traveling solo to achieve that goal. Within Asia, domestic travel remains popular, as 51 percent of Indian respondents prefer exploring different cities within the country itself. There is also rising demand for destinations offering diverse attractions—94 percent favor locations accessible to multiple types of experiences, such as beaches, mountains, cities, or deserts.

Cultural engagement and luxury amenities are gaining traction post-pandemic. Ninety-one percent expressed greater interest in cultural immersion opportunities and all-inclusive luxury resorts than before. Major entertainment events are seeing renewed appeal too; while 89 percent avoided attending such gatherings last year, many now intend to return to concerts, festivals, and similar in-person activities in 2022.

Family-focused travel stands out as a defining trend among Indian travellers. According to Manoj Adlakha, Senior Vice President and CEO of American Express Banking Corp. in India, “After two tough years, the travel sentiment amongst Indian travellers is upbeat where spending time with loved ones is a top priority.” He added that 94 percent of respondents plan to travel more frequently with family this year, including 89 percent who are particularly interested in multi-generational trips.

Bookings for dream vacations are expected to rise sharply, with 91 percent of Indians surveyed saying they will pursue journeys they previously wouldn’t have considered before the pandemic. These findings suggest that personal fulfillment, flexibility, and mindful consumption are reshaping how Indian travellers approach leisure and exploration in the coming months.
