Jamaica and Saudi Arabia explore new air links

Jamaica and Saudi Arabia are exploring new air links that could transform travel between the Middle East and Caribbean. Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett has opened talks with Saudi Arabia’s Air Connectivity Programme, with potential benefits for tourism, business travel, cargo traffic and Jamaica’s ambitions as a regional aviation hub.

Exploring New Routes

The Honourable Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, met with representatives of Saudi Arabia’s Air Connectivity Programme (ACP) in Riyadh for an initial dialogue aimed at expanding the island’s international air capacity and tapping new tourism source markets.

This conversation forms part of a broader series of engagements between the two nations that span tourism development, aviation cooperation, investment opportunities and human-capital initiatives. The Saudi ACP collaborates with both public authorities and private partners to design flight routes that support the Kingdom’s wider tourism and aviation goals outlined in Vision 2030.

During the Riyadh session, participants examined how stronger air links could position Jamaica as a gateway to the Caribbean, while granting travellers from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states easier entry to the island. The island might also evolve into a regional hub for subsequent business and leisure journeys, and the added connectivity could support passenger and cargo flows linking Saudi Arabia, the Caribbean and Latin America.

Enhanced air ties with Saudi Arabia stand to benefit Jamaican hotels, attractions, ground-transport services and small-to-medium tourism enterprises by encouraging additional visitor arrivals and unlocking a relatively untapped source market.

“Air connectivity with Jamaica and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia would open a wealth of opportunities for both countries through visitor and cargo traffic,” Jamaica’s Director of Tourism, Donovan White, said.

“While the logistics require deeper technical discussions, there is real potential we are eager to capitalize on.”
