Short summer trips win over travellers

Short summer trips win over travellers

GreenGo, the French platform specializing in eco-friendly accommodations, has released its first summer 2026 report, and the data shows a clear preference for shorter getaways. Figures collected through August 17 reveal that couples made up 60.8% of all reservations, with the average stay lasting just 2.9 nights — a 3% drop compared to the reference period. More than six out of ten bookings (62.5%) were for one or two nights only.

The trend points toward travelers taking multiple short breaks rather than one extended vacation. The average budget held relatively steady at 367 euros per stay, down just 1%, while the median price per night rose 2% to 112 euros. Last-minute planning also gained ground, with 34.2% of stays booked within 14 days of arrival.

A summer of short stays and stable budgets

These preliminary numbers will be refined in early September once August reservations are fully consolidated. Still, the pattern is consistent with what GreenGo has observed since its commercial launch in 2021. The platform now lists more than 26,000 selected accommodations across French regions, including guesthouses, cabins, tiny houses, and other unconventional lodgings.

GreenGo reports 150,000 travelers since its founding, an average rating of 4.8/5 based on over 29,000 reviews, and more than 460,000 overnight stays recorded. The company keeps its selection deliberately tight: fewer than 30% of properties that apply are accepted. Each one is evaluated using a grid of 113 criteria and receives an eco-score and CO2 score.

The shift toward shorter trips doesn’t appear to be driven by budget constraints. Spending per stay barely moved, and nightly rates actually inched up. Travelers aren’t cutting costs so much as reallocating their vacation time — choosing frequency over duration, which may reflect changing work patterns or a desire to avoid peak-season crowding.

Ardèche, Côtes-d’Armor, and Finistère lead destination rankings

The destination rankings highlight three territories: Ardèche, Côtes-d’Armor, and Finistère. These areas align with GreenGo’s focus on regional travel and lower-impact tourism. Since 2023, the platform has developed mobility features, including a “compatible without a car” filter that identifies properties reachable by train or public transit. More than 1,500 hosts qualify, representing roughly 3,000 accommodations.

Its “Explore” engine lets users search by departure point, transport mode, and maximum travel time. The company also publishes a guide called “Destinations you won’t find in the guidebooks,” featuring three territories and nine stops with walks, villages, natural areas, and dining recommendations from local hosts.

The platform’s stated ambition is to become a European reference for local travel. For now, its summer data offers a snapshot of how French vacationers are choosing to spend their time — closer to home, in shorter bursts, and with less planning ahead. The final numbers for August will tell whether these early trends held through the end of the season.
